With the start of the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season, the JNGI Mobile Catastrophe Response Service (MCRS) is prepared for all eventualities, says Andrea Gordon-Martin, Assistant General Manager for Operations.
Early forecasts by the Colorado State University and from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the United States, report a below average season for the low pressure systems which develop into hurricanes. However, Mrs. Gordon-Martin points out that the prediction was similar in 2012 when Hurricane Sandy levelled parts of Eastern Jamaica.
“It only takes one hurricane to cause a disaster if that hurricane just happens to affect you, as was the case with Sandy,” she stated. “The arrival of Sandy was the first time that JNGI deployed its Mobile Catastrophe Response Service, and the results were very positive.”
She stated that following that hurricane, JNGI contacted its entire home insurance customer base to determine whether they suffered damage. The insurer immediately activated its MCRS teams, which operate alongside the Jamaica Automobile Association.
“The teams went out to clients who indicated that they had suffered damage to their homes and properties,” she explained. “And, they distributed recovery “Catastrophe Kits” containing tarpaulins, water and hand sanitizer.”
Such basic supplies are appreciated in the emergency situation, she pointed out. In addition, getting MCRS team members immediately to the scene of the devastation also reduced the burden on the customer to relate the extent of damage, often weeks later when the situation has eased.
“Most customers were able to get visits from our MCRS teams in one day,” she said. And, loss Adjustors were also appointed where the damage justified it, to ensure the speedy settlement of insurance claims.
“We were able to test the Mobile Catastrophe Response Service in 2012 and it provided a valuable service to the affected customers,” Mrs. Gordon-Martin stated. “Therefore, if we are needed in 2014, you can be confident that we will be there for you.”
